It Cost's What?!?!

I had the great opportunity to write a quest blog post for Give1Save1 this week! Check it out on all the ins and outs of Adoption Costs and how to do it wisely! :)

Here is the link:
It Cost's What!?!?! Debt Free Adoption

I’ve been surprised at the amount of conversations I’ve had with people who say things like, “We would love to adopt but we just don’t have that kind of money.”

Apparently, you don’t know me. Up until I was 24, I thought credit cards were made for my own personal enjoyment and when I figured out that you actually had to pay that money back, I married a youth pastor.

Here is a little insight: No one has “that kind of money”.
Well, someone does.
Bill Gates.

But if you aren’t Bill Gates, or someone in that money zipcode, you don’t typically just have $30-40,000 lying around for a rainy day.

The cost of adoption is ridiculous. This is not a myth.
The bigger tragedy, however, are children living without families because adoption is expensive.

The truth of the matter is…
IF YOU HAVE THE HEART TO ADOPT THEN YOU CAN ADOPT!

I am taking huge liberties here, but I would say one of the top reasons why people don’t adopt (even if they feel called to) is because of the money issue.

When Erik and I started our adoption process, with our net worth being somewhere far in the negative thousands territory, we were 3 months into a David Ramsey money makeover. There was a part in the book that we were reading that said something along the lines of this…

“Nowhere in the Bible does God call us into a purpose and use debt as a means to accomplish it.”

And so, since we were committed to our new lifestyle changes, we made a promise.

ADOPT WITHOUT DEBT.

After 1 ½ years,  $42,000, and part-way through 2 different adoptions, we have remained debt-free from our adoption process. Did you hear that?

Debt free.

And let me tell you now, this is NOT a reflection of our awesome money-saving, penny-pinching abilities. We walked into adoption with $42 in our bank account. This has been through a lot of hard work, a lot of supportive people, a lot of great resources, and a lot of prayer.
So, is this even possible? Just because we are doing it, can you? YES!!!

Here are a few of the biggest things that have helped us along the way, that I thought I’d pass on to anyone out there who, like myself, worries, frets, or looses sleep over adoption costs.

1. Get Committed!

No, not psych ward committed. (Although there are days where I feel that is a valid option). Make the commitment with your partner or support network that you are going to go forward debt-free. These days, there are a lot of options out there like Adoption Loans or Credit Card deals that make that “safe” option appealing. And sometimes, it is necessary. But, if you can commit to it from the beginning, having that accountability is clutch when you get those phone calls that tell you that you have an unknown $7,000 adoption bill that needs to be paid in 4 weeks.

After our “commitment”, a great friend of mine suggested this book to me. And it is AMAZING!! It kind of makes you feel like you can take over the world, which you sometimes need to feel when you are walking through the adoption process. She has TONS of great resources and ideas for fundraisers, grants, and resources. It took me all of like 1 hour to read (which is saying a lot). It is well worth the $12 on Amazon.

3. Get Connected!
Probably the #1 greatest thing that you can do during your adoption process is to get connected. Connect with other adoptive families, your friends and family, your church body, your yoga class, whoever! It is totally your family’s discretion as to how much you choose to share or not share about your adoption. Some people are willing to be far more open than others, and that is fine. But start off knowing that you can’t do it alone. And you shouldn’t do it alone. Adoption is a hard journey and the more people you allow into your journey, the more arms and hands you have to hold you up when you are miles down the road and exhausted!
We have found one of the most effective ways to do this is through our blog. It has been an incredible resource not just for us to connect with others, but for others to join our journey! If you aren’t “tech-savy”, ask someone who is to get you set up. That is the hardest part.
But really…just yesterday I asked Erik how to search for directions on Googlemaps. So, if I can, you can.
If you don’t feel like that is your family’s cup-o-tea, set up a group email and keep your friends and family updated. It is surprising how many people really DO want to know how the process is going! And if your family is anything like mine, not updating them will just beckon multiple phone calls on the daily.

4. Get Creative!
There are probably a billion and one things that you can do to raise money for your adoption. The book I mentioned earlier is a great tool for that. But sometimes, you have to be willing to think outside of the box to bring attention to those things. We have done several handfuls of fundraisers and found that making videos to grab people’s attention has been one of the biggest tools in helping us raise money! Peeps LOVE their media, and as soon as we started making small video updates, people started sharing, new people joined the cause, and fundraising became even more fun and more successful!

5. Get to Workin!
Fundraising and Debt-Free adoption is hard work. It doesn’t come just by sitting around clickin’ buttons. I have taken on several freelance jobs, as well as started up an entire photography business to help support our adoption. We don’t expect to sit around and just wait for people to pour out money on us or “make it rain” as the young folks would say. But I have found that even in my extra jobs, people have supported above and beyond what they have needed to give. They want to get behind us and help us bring our children home. So even just talking about our adoption on a photo shoot or when I’m working with clients has opened up the doors to new and more business.
I realize that not everyone has time for extra jobs. But you can always make it work around what you can and can’t do (i.e. offering to watch somone’s kids a couple times a week for pay if you are a stay-at-home-mom, doing yard work for your neighbors on weekends if you work during the week, helping someone set up a blog if you are a tech-kind-person). Basically think, “How would I make money if I was in high school again?” Even those little amounts of extra cash are useful for Homestudy doctor’s appointments or fingerprints!

6. Get Granted!
Grants are amazing! We’ve have be awarded grants with several places – anywhere from $500-$5,000. There are a ton of great Grants that can be applied for (Show Hope, Abba Fund, God’s Grace, Lifesong, etc.) and all it takes is a little bit of time and a stamped envelope. Most Grant applications ask the same questions, so you can even cut down on time by typing out your answers and recycling them through each application. We made a date night out of it one evening and powered through a few applications. It was basically like a 2 for 1 deal! Nothing more romantic than a glass of wine and an essay about your desire to adopt.

7. Get to Prayin’.
The whole adoption journey is really a big faith journey. I whole-heartedly believe that adoption is biblical and a reflection of the heart of God. Invite Him to be at the center of your journey and keep Him at the front of everything you do. So even when it is really hard, we’ve stopped looking at the dollar sign in front of us and started focusing of Christ before us. He is basically like the most hardcore warrior ever and I’ve come to learn quickly that He doesn’t loose. Keeping every part of this journey covered in prayer keeps your perspective in the right place.

Ok. Wow. That is so much info.

But here is the deal. I’ve learned to take a giant dose of humility when it comes to adoption.
1.     It’s about more than just me. It is about an orphaned child becoming a part of a family.
2.     I can’t do it alone. We’ve had to depend of more people than I probably would have ever thought or hoped to.
3.     You have to ask for help. (That is a hard one for me.)
4.     God is in control. (Even harder for me…I’m a huge control freak.)

Someone asked Erik one time if we ever get tired of asking for money. (Quite a bold question if you ask me.) He is kind of a rockstar and responded with this…

“If your child was half-way across the world and you were trying to get them home, wouldn’t you do whatever it takes?”

Will you?

So if you, or anyone you know, have ever been scared off by the dollar signs or multiple zeros tossed around in the adoption conversation, know this…

It is more than possible. It is necessary.

Take it from a commoner.

Because of you...

Because of God's people doing unthinkable things...

Rallying around us in ways that we could have never imagined....

Standing up for us when we felt weak, overwhelmed, and defeated...

Because you said yes to making a difference...

Thank you.

Thank you for your generosity.

Love.

Encouragements.

For everything.

This is what happened.

And IS happening.

Because of you.

Give1Save1 South Africa Day 2!!

It is a miracle that I am even able to see as I type, considering we were both in tears all day yesterday with the RIDICULOUS outpouring of love and support that we were shown in just 24 hours!

Seriously people. Like for real.

It is funny how I doubt and worry and get anxious so much when God continually shows His blessing in ways FAR bigger than I can even imagine.

If God had a Twitter, he would "#BOOM" all the time.

So we are on to Day 2 of Give1Save1 and have no idea what to expect because clearly God is in the business of doing that.

Here is a little recap from of our thoughts yesterday!

We love you guys so much!! Thank you!!!

Now lets go dominate Day 2!!!

You Are Loved.

I always find it difficult to start a blog post when you are already speechless to begin with.

It's kind of an oxymoron, falling into the same category as Jumbo Shrimp, Bitter Sweet, Artificial Grass...

Speechless Blogpost?

In January, Erik and I were brainstorming fundraising options for our (at the time) one adoption from Ethiopia. We desired a way to fundraise by bringing all the people we love together and worshipping God and sharing our story all at the same time.

Insert For All Seasons.

As an incredible worship band leading music for our students at Winter Camp, turned overnight incredible and dear friends...we approached them with our crazy idea.

How about a Worship Adoption Benefit Night?

It took like 1.3 seconds to receive an enthusiastic "YES!" and an even shorter amount of time for Erik and the drummer to start embracing like long-lost war mates.

And so was the birth of the "You Are Loved" Adoption Benefit Night.

The one that happened last night.

The one that blew our expectations of God out of the water.

The one that reflected the beauty of the hearts of so many people.

The one that continued to confirm God's hand and plan at work.

The one that screamed, "YOU ARE LOVED!"

For All Seasons led worship in a way that invited the Spirit to fill the sanctuary and fill our bodies and hearts in powerful ways...
we had incredible help with sound and media - like the kind that made everything look and sound like you were in a different element of life...
girls made delicious cupcakes to celebrate and bless others with afterwards...
friends helped in taking the offering and donations being handed in...
more friends helped to set up/take down/prepare...
girls helped with childcare so parents could be a part of the worship time...
one of our amazing high school students, Danielle, shared her own story of adoption and how it has shaped her family...

I mean. It was U.N.B.E.L.I.E.V.A.B.L.E.

Wouldn't you be left speechless?

Last night, Erik and I found ourselves in tears. Completely overwhelmed by the love and support. Completely moved by how God goes so far beyond what you expect, even when you have seen Him exceed expectations before.

Because of willing, loving, supporting hearts, we are one step closer to bringing our daughter home.

Actually....

$3, 079 closer to bringing our daughter home.

Right??!?!

And it is thanks to all of you.

So, in one of the speechless, blubbery, messy kind of ways...

Thank you. Thank you from the depths of our hearts. Thank you for being a part of our story. Our daughter's story.

Thank you.

(If you weren't able to make the evening...here is a little glimpse of our more recent story that we shared last night).

Just Because You're Young...

Doesn't mean you can't change the world.

Or at least the lives of the people in your world.

As I said in my last post, since we began this adoption process, we have had SO many people wrap their arms around us in support and love.

It has been astounding.

The way that God shows up through His people. The way people respond. The way rescue missions get accomplished.

Wow.

Now I have the awesome privilege to introduce you to one of the most incredible people that I have ever known.

Meet Olivia.

Olivia is my cousin...well...if you are being technical...my second cousin.
But I call her cousin/friend/sister/celebrity.

She is a senior in high school in the Chicagoland area and is probably one of the most talented people I know!
Like...RIDICULOUSLY talented!
This girl creates artwork like I have never seen before! I mean, it is just unbelievable. And beautiful.
She will be going Colombia College (one of the nations most diverse and prestigious art schools) next year as she pursues her dream of being an artist!

Right?! No big deal.

But, aside from all the obvious cool stuff, probably the most amazing thing about this girl is her heart.
It is so huge.
So beautiful.
So compassionate.

She loves others so selflessly and constantly challenges me to a deeper and more true pursuit of the Lord.

So, what do you get when you combine a ridiculously amazing girl + ridiculously amazing talent + ridiculously amazing heart.....

Well,
this:

Amazing.

Olivia has hand created these images and more to help support our adoption and is now selling them on her online shop to support bringing home our kiddos.

HOW COOL IS THAT?!?

Yeah. Pretty stinkin cool.

Check out her shop

  HERE!

and buy some prints or canvases! Proceeds will go directly toward our adoption!

We are beside ourselves with excitement to share this with you not only because it is awesome and not only because it supports our adoption...

But because we are so grateful and so humbled to be able to say Thank You on this blog to the beautiful, talented, world-changing, Olivia Boyd.

You can truly change lives at any age. You just have to be willing to say yes.

And don't let anyone look down on you because you are young.
Teach believers with your life:
by word
by demeanor
by love
by faith
by integrity.

We Would Like to Announce...

We know that we have kept you guys on the edge of your seat for a little while.

I also know that Erik has been priming the pump with lots and lots of teasers.
(This is what happens when you go out of town to a place with know internet connection and leave your blog password with your husband).

But without further adieu, we would like to announce that...

We have been chosen as the GIVE1SAVE1 family of the week!!!!!!

Um...get pumped. This is awesome!! Like...REALLY AWESOME! And a huge huge huge huge huge blessing!!!!

What is it, you ask?
Give1Save1 is an incredible blog/concept started by a really amazing woman to help adoptive families raise funds for...well...adopting! The concept is that each week a family is featured by submitting a video and during that week people can go and donate $1 (or more) to help them raise their adoption funds! Incredible, right? Each dollar goes toward not just helping to fund adoption, but saving and restoring lives in all kinds of ways.

And this week...it is us!

So, what does this mean?
For the entire week, we will be featured on this blog allowing people to go and donate to our adoption!! What an awesome opportunity to share our story! We already feel so blessed!!

So here is what to do...let me give you some instructions:

1. Click HERE or HERE or HERE or HERE...that is just 4 options all going to the same place :)

2. Check out our video and hear a little about our story and donate if you can!

3. Pass this on to friends and family like crazy!! This works best the more that we get the word out! Post it to your blogs, Facebook it, Tweet it, put it on the NASA space shuttle...whatever form you got, please use it! And in the words of Erik Anderson, "Shake what your momma gave ya!" (I don't know. He just wanted me to say that).

4. Lastly, this is an incredible place that helps out tons of families walking through this journey, not just us! So, show the love and check it out on other weeks as well to see how you can help save lives all over the world!

Why is it so hard?

Think drama people...DRAMA!

No, not the Britney Spears, Rhianna, Kardashian kind of drama.

I'm talking Vacation Bible School Son Surf drama. This is where I begin.

My role: Sunrise Sunset...the beach jewelry stand hippie. (Yes, one day I even sang a song that my mom actually wrote during her good ole REAL hippie days of burning bras and reppin' the peace sign).

Erik's role: Tanner McBuff...the oh so fine beach lifeguard with a slight ego problem. (I kind of have the hots for him!)

Our last couple of weeks have been filled with drama. Skit practices, performances, and getting to know the fine people that have put all of this together. The Davis Family.

And really, that is where this post brings me today. It really has little to do with skits and way more to do with the Davis'.

Let me introduce you.

Matt and Kimberly and their 3 kids are completely amazing. Not only are they the most real and transparent family that I know, but they fully live each day into the grace of God and His call on our lives.

So much so that they are puttin' on their boots, packin' up their bags, and heading off to London to be full-time missionaries in an often overlooked city that desperately needs Jesus. (You can check out their website here!)

Talk about being the hands and feet of God.

Our conversation today brought us to the topic of fundraising. Fundraising for Missionaries and fundraising for adoption. As many of you know, Erik and I are fundraising for our adoption (to which the Davis kids contributed by bringing us an envelope of hard earned lemonade stand money and praying with us about our adoption...um...hello awesome!).

And as many of you may or may not know, most Missionaries (such as the Davis's) are fully supported financially by fundraising.

Fundraising is hard. I mean like...REALLY hard. There is a part at the beginning when you are fired up and the world is your oyster and the sun is always shining and nothing can hold you down. You have a rapid fire of people who can't wait to help out and an outpouring of incredible blessing.

And that is exactly what it is. Incredible blessing.

But then...you hit the incline. It is like riding a bike downhill, lifting your feet off the pedals, coasting halfway up the next hill and realizing that you forgot to stick with the momentum to make it all the way up.

It is hard and it is slow.

So why is it so hard?

Why is it easier to critique the way people are fundraising or if they actually really "need" to be supported than it is to just not spend money at Starbucks everyday and trust that your willingness to love someone out of what you have is better than a 3rd cup of freshly brewed coffee. (Me = guilty).

Matt quoted on his Facebook one day that if every one of their friends committed to give their family $25 a month to support them as missionaries, they would be fully funded by support and ready to go.

$25. That is it. That is nothing.

But fundraising ISN'T nothing. It is a big fat something that scares people away from saying, "I want to walk along side of you, no strings attached."

For some reason, I think that we have it in our heads (and I am speaking for myself) that supporting missionaries or people who are fundraising means that we have to hand them a check for $500 in order for it to mean something.
I don't know about you...but I can't afford that.

We have received several cards with $10 or $20 to go toward our adoption. Those cards mean just as much as the $500 checks, because they say "I am willing."

So why aren't we willing? What are we protecting by not giving out of what God has given us?

And what are we missing out on by not allowing ourselves to immerse into a much greater and bigger picture?

We have been so supported and so loved by a TON of people. In huge ways and in small ways. And for that, I am overwhelmed with thankfulness.

I think that those people get it.

I...well...I'm still working on it.

Drama.

A Little Not So Little Update.

I thought that I would take a moment to "adoption update" all of the wonderful people who so faithfully check into our blog. I know that I write blips here and there about what we are doing, what we have finished, and more often, how I am feeling, but I was kindly and graciously reminded by my mother that it would be nice to do a little recap/update in one post.

Even at the ripe age of 28, I often wonder, "What would I do without my mother?"

So, here is what is up in the Anderson Way of Adoption:

1. WHERE DID YOU SAY?
We are adopting from Ethiopia. :) I state this only because we still have had several people ask us where we are adopting from or if we had decided if we were doing international or domestic. If you are new to this blog or new to our story, check out this post on how we came to this decision! As far as preference goes, we have listed a child of either gender between the ages of 0-2 years.

2. WHAT DID THE BEGINNING OF THIS LOOK LIKE AGAIN?
We officially started our adoption process with the Home Study in January. Contrary to what many might think, this only included one visit to our house and the actual "study" of our home was minimal.
I'm not gonna lie...that was slightly disappointing.

The majority of our Home Study was made up of meeting with our Social Worker at the Bethany Agency office, talking about our lives, our families, our hopes, our jobs, our faith...basically like a CSI investigation on steroids and with a strong guarantee of no jail time at the end. (We had some training mixed in with all of that as well...so maybe more like FBI?)

We finished our Home Study at the beginning of April and have currently been waiting for it to be approved by the Bethany headquarters in Michigan. This process has taken a bit longer than we had hoped...but it's almost done!

3. SO WHERE YOU AT NOW, SUCKA?
While we have been waiting for that, we started on our Dossier (Doss-e-ay). Basically, this is all of the official documentation about Erik and Jessa Anderson that will go over to Ethiopia and allow us to be approved to adopt from their country.
It is intense. It has moments of being REAL ugly. And it is tedious. Good thing I inherited my momma's awesome organizational skills. I have never loved 3 ring binders, checklists, and plastic sheet covers so much...in my life!

At this moment, all we are waiting for is our Home Study to be approved and notarized so that we can send it to US Immigration to be approved to bring a child into the country. The rest of our Dossier is COMPLETE! We are hoping to have everything sent off by July....fingers crossed...fingers crossed...

PICTURE BREAK!!!

5. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER ALL OF THAT?
After all of that, we wait. We wait for a long time. We are put onto a waiting list to receive a referral of a child. There are no guarantees, but judging from what I have seen, read, and heard, the wait time is anywhere between 9 and 18 months...to receive a referral. Another 6 or so months to actually get a court date, travel, and officially bring our child home. That is...if all goes smoothly...which in adoption, the road is more like budget cut California roads after the rainy season.

6. DOLLA DOLLA BILLS YA'LL!
On the topic of Fundraising...
We have been SOOOOOOOOO blessed. There have been so many instances of grace, compassion, and generosity shown toward us that honestly, we are a little taken back. I have shared this with a few people, but when we started this whole process, finances was one of my biggest fears. It is incredible how God can take one of your biggest fears, when you hand it to Him, and turn it into a reaping of absolute humility and peace.

If you follow our "Fundraising Thermometer" you have seen that line raising over the last few months to almost half of the cost! It is AMAZING! So, I will take this moment to say a huge THANK YOU to all of the people who have given of there own means to help support us on this journey. There are not even enough words to thank you all enough. You truly do have a special piece of our child's life!

We obviously have more work to do in terms of working toward the total cost, but feel so confident in God's wide open doors and blessings!

7. CAN I GET AN AMEN?
Interpretation: How can you be praying?
This is another question that we get a lot and probably one of the best ones that we are asked! We firmly believe that your prayers are one of the strongest supports that we can be shown, knowing that God is faithful to His children who come before Him and seek Him.
So as far as prayers...here are a few:
  • That ultimately, God would be glorified through this process, through us, and through each person who is uniquely a part of this story.
  • For the process of Ethiopian adoption going on right now, as there are always obstacles, challenges, corruption, and changes. Everything that is happening now effects the lives of children who are waiting for homes with loving families. Please be praying for the Ethiopian and US government, orphanages, and agencies that are working hard to match children with families and care for the orphans.
  • For the completion of our Home Study and Dossier...for a smooth, error free process...and for wise and discerning eyes to catch anything that needs to be done or changed quickly and effectively
  • Peace, patience, and understanding as we continue to walk through this process. Each new day there are new feelings of excitement, hope, sadness, frustration...you name it. Our heart is to pursue this journey and our child by following God's heart and living in His promises and displaying His character. But that is really hard sometimes. :)
  • Continued support in finances. I have been abundantly blessed with great photo jobs (which all of the proceeds go toward our adoption) and, as stated before, we have been SO blessed by the generosity of others. But we haven't reached the end yet! So keep praying!

If you are still reading this...
Thank you. Thank you for walking through this with us, being a part of our story, our child's story, and God's amazing story. We couldn't do it without you.

Phew...
I think that is it. Holy cow. Talk much?

My Life As A Time Lapse

As a kid, I remember watching special videos that my dad made. As a photographer for FOX, this was not a rare occasion. However, this specific video I recall vividly in my mind...and I'm not sure why.

In 1995 St. Louis constructed the Trans World Dome (now known as the Edward Jones Dome) in order to bring the NFL back to the area. I remember my dad spending tons and tons of hours piecing together a time-lapse video of its construction. He was so proud of the result after hours, days, weeks, and months of work.

I remember watching the video and being proud too.

I also remember being amazed at seeing something that was built over a long period of time come together in a span of 5 minutes.

Doesn't it sometimes feel like life is that same way? You work so hard for these huge events in life and then all of a sudden they are over and it feels like you were just living life as a part of a time lapse.

The last 4 weeks of our lives have felt that. I mean like high speed, crazy outcome, non-stop time lapse.

Here is a little review. In the last 4 weeks, we have:
  • Hosted 1 Student Ministries Fundraiser
  • Hosted and ran 2 Adoption Fundraisers
  • Completed our Homestudy for Adoption
  • Housesat for one of our High School Students
  • Had an out of town visitor for a few days
  • Successfully put together and completed our High School Mission Trip
  • Lead Worship for Sunday Church
  • Preached a Sermon
  • And a partridge in a pear tree?

I think back and wonder how on earth we fit all of this into our lives (on top of the regular work schedule, photo shoots, bible studies, seminary). When I look back at it, it is just a glimpse of the reality of the time spent to build, construct, and execute the actual events.

It all happened so fast.

Now that I have some time to step back and slow down, I look back at the completed month and see the incredible results of all of this madness!

To list a few...

  • Relationships built cross-generationally within our church through raising money for CHIC
  • 2 months of prayers and encouragement to get us to the point of completing the first step of our adoption
  • $1,700 raised from our Mini Session Photography Fundraiser
  • Renewal and Refreshment in old friendships
  • Building and deepening in new friendships
  • Seeing the fruits of letting go and trusting God
  • Changed lives through service
  • Stronger relationships within our student body
  • Stirred passion in our hearts for Inner City Missions
  • Finding purpose in using our gifts to glorify God

You can't always see things clearly when you are in the thick of it. Sometimes it takes watching it all pieced together at completion to realize that the whole process...long, daunting, and challenging as it may be...has created something beautiful. Beautiful and lasting.

Mini Session, Mini Preview

We did our Mini Session Photography Fundraiser this past Saturday and WHOA!!! It was INCREDIBLE!!! We had such a blast creating unique and fun backdrops, capturing some amazing photos, laughing, and getting to know some really incredible families!

Sadly, we had to cancel the afternoon because the weather just got a little too severe...
40 mph winds and horizontal rain don't make for the best photography? Weird.

We did, however, have a great morning and got some fantastic shots before the monsoon rolled in so I thought we would give you all a quick preview! Here are a few of my favorite shots from the day!

The best part about all of this is that we get to do it again this weekend!! AH! So, if you didn't get a chance to sign up but want to...let me know!

Thanks to everyone who did come out this past Saturday and braved the crazy weather with us! We had so much fun and feel so blessed by each of you!
