You Are Loved.

I always find it difficult to start a blog post when you are already speechless to begin with.

It's kind of an oxymoron, falling into the same category as Jumbo Shrimp, Bitter Sweet, Artificial Grass...

Speechless Blogpost?

In January, Erik and I were brainstorming fundraising options for our (at the time) one adoption from Ethiopia. We desired a way to fundraise by bringing all the people we love together and worshipping God and sharing our story all at the same time.

Insert For All Seasons.

As an incredible worship band leading music for our students at Winter Camp, turned overnight incredible and dear friends...we approached them with our crazy idea.

How about a Worship Adoption Benefit Night?

It took like 1.3 seconds to receive an enthusiastic "YES!" and an even shorter amount of time for Erik and the drummer to start embracing like long-lost war mates.

And so was the birth of the "You Are Loved" Adoption Benefit Night.

The one that happened last night.

The one that blew our expectations of God out of the water.

The one that reflected the beauty of the hearts of so many people.

The one that continued to confirm God's hand and plan at work.

The one that screamed, "YOU ARE LOVED!"

For All Seasons led worship in a way that invited the Spirit to fill the sanctuary and fill our bodies and hearts in powerful ways...
we had incredible help with sound and media - like the kind that made everything look and sound like you were in a different element of life...
girls made delicious cupcakes to celebrate and bless others with afterwards...
friends helped in taking the offering and donations being handed in...
more friends helped to set up/take down/prepare...
girls helped with childcare so parents could be a part of the worship time...
one of our amazing high school students, Danielle, shared her own story of adoption and how it has shaped her family...

I mean. It was U.N.B.E.L.I.E.V.A.B.L.E.

Wouldn't you be left speechless?

Last night, Erik and I found ourselves in tears. Completely overwhelmed by the love and support. Completely moved by how God goes so far beyond what you expect, even when you have seen Him exceed expectations before.

Because of willing, loving, supporting hearts, we are one step closer to bringing our daughter home.

Actually....

$3, 079 closer to bringing our daughter home.

Right??!?!

And it is thanks to all of you.

So, in one of the speechless, blubbery, messy kind of ways...

Thank you. Thank you from the depths of our hearts. Thank you for being a part of our story. Our daughter's story.

Thank you.

(If you weren't able to make the evening...here is a little glimpse of our more recent story that we shared last night).

Just Because You're Young...

Doesn't mean you can't change the world.

Or at least the lives of the people in your world.

As I said in my last post, since we began this adoption process, we have had SO many people wrap their arms around us in support and love.

It has been astounding.

The way that God shows up through His people. The way people respond. The way rescue missions get accomplished.

Wow.

Now I have the awesome privilege to introduce you to one of the most incredible people that I have ever known.

Meet Olivia.

Olivia is my cousin...well...if you are being technical...my second cousin.
But I call her cousin/friend/sister/celebrity.

She is a senior in high school in the Chicagoland area and is probably one of the most talented people I know!
Like...RIDICULOUSLY talented!
This girl creates artwork like I have never seen before! I mean, it is just unbelievable. And beautiful.
She will be going Colombia College (one of the nations most diverse and prestigious art schools) next year as she pursues her dream of being an artist!

Right?! No big deal.

But, aside from all the obvious cool stuff, probably the most amazing thing about this girl is her heart.
It is so huge.
So beautiful.
So compassionate.

She loves others so selflessly and constantly challenges me to a deeper and more true pursuit of the Lord.

So, what do you get when you combine a ridiculously amazing girl + ridiculously amazing talent + ridiculously amazing heart.....

Well,
this:

Amazing.

Olivia has hand created these images and more to help support our adoption and is now selling them on her online shop to support bringing home our kiddos.

HOW COOL IS THAT?!?

Yeah. Pretty stinkin cool.

Check out her shop

  HERE!

and buy some prints or canvases! Proceeds will go directly toward our adoption!

We are beside ourselves with excitement to share this with you not only because it is awesome and not only because it supports our adoption...

But because we are so grateful and so humbled to be able to say Thank You on this blog to the beautiful, talented, world-changing, Olivia Boyd.

You can truly change lives at any age. You just have to be willing to say yes.

And don't let anyone look down on you because you are young.
Teach believers with your life:
by word
by demeanor
by love
by faith
by integrity.

We Would Like to Announce...

We know that we have kept you guys on the edge of your seat for a little while.

I also know that Erik has been priming the pump with lots and lots of teasers.
(This is what happens when you go out of town to a place with know internet connection and leave your blog password with your husband).

But without further adieu, we would like to announce that...

We have been chosen as the GIVE1SAVE1 family of the week!!!!!!

Um...get pumped. This is awesome!! Like...REALLY AWESOME! And a huge huge huge huge huge blessing!!!!

What is it, you ask?
Give1Save1 is an incredible blog/concept started by a really amazing woman to help adoptive families raise funds for...well...adopting! The concept is that each week a family is featured by submitting a video and during that week people can go and donate $1 (or more) to help them raise their adoption funds! Incredible, right? Each dollar goes toward not just helping to fund adoption, but saving and restoring lives in all kinds of ways.

And this week...it is us!

So, what does this mean?
For the entire week, we will be featured on this blog allowing people to go and donate to our adoption!! What an awesome opportunity to share our story! We already feel so blessed!!

So here is what to do...let me give you some instructions:

1. Click HERE or HERE or HERE or HERE...that is just 4 options all going to the same place :)

2. Check out our video and hear a little about our story and donate if you can!

3. Pass this on to friends and family like crazy!! This works best the more that we get the word out! Post it to your blogs, Facebook it, Tweet it, put it on the NASA space shuttle...whatever form you got, please use it! And in the words of Erik Anderson, "Shake what your momma gave ya!" (I don't know. He just wanted me to say that).

4. Lastly, this is an incredible place that helps out tons of families walking through this journey, not just us! So, show the love and check it out on other weeks as well to see how you can help save lives all over the world!

Top Secret News - 48 hrs

Hello Everyone,

Have you ever been blown away by God's blessings? So much so that it leaves you shaking your head in humble wonder?

That's where I'm at right now. God just threw down a huge blessing that inches us closer to the next chapter in our adoption journey.

I'm serious! We have some fantastic, amazing, ridiculously incredible news to share with everyone. It's sort of like waiting in line at Disneyland to ride space mountain! (just less screaming children who have been "holding it" for the last hour while waiting in line)

The anticipation is killing me!

I think I will just go ahead and say it.... We are...

(in my head) "DON'T DO IT ERIK!!! HAVE PATIENCE!! KEEP YOUR LIPS SEALED!"

Jessa made me "pinky promise" while looking her in the eye that I would keep this one a secret....something which I am dreadful at!

So until these 48 hours pass, we will all patiently wait together!

I promise this isn't a "Y2K" fake out, we really do have something exciting to tell you.

Time to stop before I spill it. Stay Tuned!

Erik

Signed, Sealed, Deliver-ing?

Looks like I won't be the only thing on a plane this weekend.

We just found out that our Dossier arrived back from Washington D.C., authenticated and ready to be sent on it's way to Ethiopia!

So, while I'm sailing the blue skies over the Rockies, our future parenthood will be voyaging it's way over the blue seas of the Atlantic.

Sounds like a good travel weekend to me.

September 24th.

Awesome, right?

Want to know what this is all about?

It is really cool...

Like really really REALLY cool.

Like Gangnam Style cool.

Stay tuned because there is a countdown. The final countdown?

No.

Just stay tuned.

The Good vs. The Ugly

Adoption is a beautiful thing.

When Erik and I started this process, we found ourselves obsessively drawn toward watching Ethiopian Adoption "Gotcha Day" videos on YouTube.

If you need a REALLY good full body cleansing cry...go look it up. You can thank me later.

Everyone always tells us that they are so excited for us. That this is such an amazing thing that we are going through. That adoption...well...adoption is a beautiful thing.

I don't disagree. But I also think there are some really ugly sides. Some really hard sides. Some really messed up and upsetting things about it that come with the good.

We have been getting updates for the past couple of months about the government process in Ethiopia and how things are changing. We were told that we might be seeing an increase in wait times but would be officially notified by mid-September.

On Friday, we found out that Dossiers sent to Ethiopia as of August are looking at a 29-31 month wait time from the time our Dossier is in Ethiopia to referral.
29-31 months?
They don't show that in the "Gotcha Day" videos.

We have made a lot of great friends through this adoption process that I know are hearing the same news and I know are saddened, discouraged, and broken-hearted.

We also know that there are a lot of kids in Ethiopia waiting for homes, waiting for families, waiting for someone to do something.

It doesn't make sense.
It makes me so mad.
It breaks our hearts.
It makes us hate the bad so much.
It makes us question the good.
It throws everything up in the air and begs the question, "What happens now?"

I am slightly at a loss today.

"But those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, they run and don’t get tired, they walk and do not grow faint." Isaiah 40:31

A Little Not So Little Update.

I thought that I would take a moment to "adoption update" all of the wonderful people who so faithfully check into our blog. I know that I write blips here and there about what we are doing, what we have finished, and more often, how I am feeling, but I was kindly and graciously reminded by my mother that it would be nice to do a little recap/update in one post.

Even at the ripe age of 28, I often wonder, "What would I do without my mother?"

So, here is what is up in the Anderson Way of Adoption:

1. WHERE DID YOU SAY?
We are adopting from Ethiopia. :) I state this only because we still have had several people ask us where we are adopting from or if we had decided if we were doing international or domestic. If you are new to this blog or new to our story, check out this post on how we came to this decision! As far as preference goes, we have listed a child of either gender between the ages of 0-2 years.

2. WHAT DID THE BEGINNING OF THIS LOOK LIKE AGAIN?
We officially started our adoption process with the Home Study in January. Contrary to what many might think, this only included one visit to our house and the actual "study" of our home was minimal.
I'm not gonna lie...that was slightly disappointing.

The majority of our Home Study was made up of meeting with our Social Worker at the Bethany Agency office, talking about our lives, our families, our hopes, our jobs, our faith...basically like a CSI investigation on steroids and with a strong guarantee of no jail time at the end. (We had some training mixed in with all of that as well...so maybe more like FBI?)

We finished our Home Study at the beginning of April and have currently been waiting for it to be approved by the Bethany headquarters in Michigan. This process has taken a bit longer than we had hoped...but it's almost done!

3. SO WHERE YOU AT NOW, SUCKA?
While we have been waiting for that, we started on our Dossier (Doss-e-ay). Basically, this is all of the official documentation about Erik and Jessa Anderson that will go over to Ethiopia and allow us to be approved to adopt from their country.
It is intense. It has moments of being REAL ugly. And it is tedious. Good thing I inherited my momma's awesome organizational skills. I have never loved 3 ring binders, checklists, and plastic sheet covers so much...in my life!

At this moment, all we are waiting for is our Home Study to be approved and notarized so that we can send it to US Immigration to be approved to bring a child into the country. The rest of our Dossier is COMPLETE! We are hoping to have everything sent off by July....fingers crossed...fingers crossed...

PICTURE BREAK!!!

5. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER ALL OF THAT?
After all of that, we wait. We wait for a long time. We are put onto a waiting list to receive a referral of a child. There are no guarantees, but judging from what I have seen, read, and heard, the wait time is anywhere between 9 and 18 months...to receive a referral. Another 6 or so months to actually get a court date, travel, and officially bring our child home. That is...if all goes smoothly...which in adoption, the road is more like budget cut California roads after the rainy season.

6. DOLLA DOLLA BILLS YA'LL!
On the topic of Fundraising...
We have been SOOOOOOOOO blessed. There have been so many instances of grace, compassion, and generosity shown toward us that honestly, we are a little taken back. I have shared this with a few people, but when we started this whole process, finances was one of my biggest fears. It is incredible how God can take one of your biggest fears, when you hand it to Him, and turn it into a reaping of absolute humility and peace.

If you follow our "Fundraising Thermometer" you have seen that line raising over the last few months to almost half of the cost! It is AMAZING! So, I will take this moment to say a huge THANK YOU to all of the people who have given of there own means to help support us on this journey. There are not even enough words to thank you all enough. You truly do have a special piece of our child's life!

We obviously have more work to do in terms of working toward the total cost, but feel so confident in God's wide open doors and blessings!

7. CAN I GET AN AMEN?
Interpretation: How can you be praying?
This is another question that we get a lot and probably one of the best ones that we are asked! We firmly believe that your prayers are one of the strongest supports that we can be shown, knowing that God is faithful to His children who come before Him and seek Him.
So as far as prayers...here are a few:
  • That ultimately, God would be glorified through this process, through us, and through each person who is uniquely a part of this story.
  • For the process of Ethiopian adoption going on right now, as there are always obstacles, challenges, corruption, and changes. Everything that is happening now effects the lives of children who are waiting for homes with loving families. Please be praying for the Ethiopian and US government, orphanages, and agencies that are working hard to match children with families and care for the orphans.
  • For the completion of our Home Study and Dossier...for a smooth, error free process...and for wise and discerning eyes to catch anything that needs to be done or changed quickly and effectively
  • Peace, patience, and understanding as we continue to walk through this process. Each new day there are new feelings of excitement, hope, sadness, frustration...you name it. Our heart is to pursue this journey and our child by following God's heart and living in His promises and displaying His character. But that is really hard sometimes. :)
  • Continued support in finances. I have been abundantly blessed with great photo jobs (which all of the proceeds go toward our adoption) and, as stated before, we have been SO blessed by the generosity of others. But we haven't reached the end yet! So keep praying!

If you are still reading this...
Thank you. Thank you for walking through this with us, being a part of our story, our child's story, and God's amazing story. We couldn't do it without you.

Phew...
I think that is it. Holy cow. Talk much?

That Binder Be Talkin' Jazz...

I feel like I'm in 4th grade again.

In 4th grade we made Missouri Notebooks. That would be like 50 solid pages of facts and famous people from Missouri. Everything from the Bluebird to Mark Twain. (You may not know, but Missouri is kickin!)

Only this binder is not about Missouri. And the facts are not along the lines of making a raft to sail down the Mississippi.

This binder is our life.
Every. Last. Detail.

May I introduce you to...the Dossier.

That would be doss-e-ay (for those of you who, like me before 2 months ago, called it something that sounded more like a reindeer).

Basically, this is every last detail of our lives - certified, notarized, state sealed, and making it possible for us to adopt from Ethiopia. And it is....well...a bit intimidating. And by a bit, I mean...a lot.

And let me tell you, this guy LOVES to talk jazz. Like the kid that shoots spitballs at you while you are taking your Algebra test. Nasty. Just plain ole nasty.

So, how does one go about taking down this giant?

You got it. One shiny little plastic page protector at a time.

We have taken our trips to the doctors, the courthouse, the banks, written our letters to the Secretary of States from Iowa and Missouri, made stupid amounts of copies and notarized the majority of our documents (thanks to the incredible blessing of a awesomely gracious friend and notary who offered to help us out)!

We aren't done yet. We still have Immigration and a few other documents that we are waiting on. But every time I check off a little box on our Dossier Checklist, I feel a bit stronger. A bit more confident. And a bit closer.

It is like the first time that you jump off of the really high diving board at the pool. Not the regular one, but the one that is like 20 stories high or something ridiculous like that. The first time you jump, it is terrifying. Straight up, wet your pants a little, crazy scary. But, once you jump...once you know you are capable of doing it...it gets easier. It just takes the first jump. It really isn't as bad as it looks.

The Dossier...

It's all bark.

Chuck Norris and the Dossier

A dear friend of mine told me today to kick the Dossier's butt.

Dear Dossier,

Consider yourself warned.

Threads of Our Journey

This is something that we have been looking forward to doing since we started this adoption...

And yes...this is the announcement that I was referring to in my previous post...so HOLD ON TO YOUR PANTS!!

And change your shirts?

Because we've got new ones for you to put on!!

We proudly introduce our first set of Love All Adoption T-shirts!!!!

This is a design that came from our hearts as not only a couple who is adopting, but a couple who believes deeply in the call to "Love All" through our ministry, words, actions, and lives.

And so, as we walk this journey, we wanted to make something that would remind us constantly that it is not just about our adoption...

But about loving others through everything that we do!

So support our adoption and the call to "Love All"...

And buy a shirt!!!

Adoption Training - Check.

Yup. That is right. We are officially online trained. We know everything.

Ok, that's not true.

But we finished our online certification. So that has to say something, right?

All that's left is Erik's physical and our home visit and we are DONE with our home study!
What what HOLLA!

And you don't even need to ask...

Yes, Erik did wear his Real D 3D glasses the entire time. Can't see a thing without 'em.

Fundraiser Announcement!

I am so excited to announce our first Mini Session Fundraiser! This is seriously something that I have been looking forward to doing for so long!

As many of you know, we are in the process of adopting a child from Ethiopia. It is a long, exciting, and crazy process but we can't wait to see how our family will be changed and formed through it!

In order for us to be able to adopt, we need help in a lot of ways...one of them being financially. So, we have put our brains together and taken advice from some great fiends and come up with fun and creative ways to fundraise!

And so, without further delay...I would like to introduce our very first...

CHILDREN AND FAMILY MINI SESSIONS!!!

This is how it works...
We have set aside one day, Saturday, March 31st, to set up a studio of amazing backgrounds for great chances to capture beautiful moments of your children and your family all together! The cost is $100 (at total steal if you ask me!) for a 20 minute session with one of two photographers. You will receive a High Resolution Disc of 25-35 of the best pictures of your child or family!

So how can you be a part of it?!
It is so easy!

1. Email me at jessa.n.anderson@gmail.com to sign up for a time slot any time between 9am-4pm on Saturday, March 31st!

2. If you are not in the area or don't have children but would like to purchase a session for someone...that is totally possible! Just let me know who and we can make it happen!

3. We will email you with the specifics about the location and time slot!

These Mini Session are not only a great way to capture wonderful and fun pictures of your children or family, but a beautiful cause in supporting adoption and care for orphans!

So don't delay! And thank you in advance for your support!

Fundraising for Adoption????

When we first set out on the adoption journey...one of the hardest things to look at face to face was the cost. It almost seems like paired up next to "parenthood", the cost is the WAAAAY scarier and WAAAAYY more unknown! I feel like that is a little twisted.

I'm not going to lie, I have had days where I have thought "I love that we are adopting but I hate that most people who have natural born kids don't have to come up with $30,000 to do it." There is a part of me that feels like it is unfair. That is just an honest moment.

When you feel God call you into something, there are usually 2 things that you can do.

1. Ignore it and pretend like you don't feel the nudges that He keeps giving you...which let's be honest...could probably get quite annoying after a while.

2. Follow. Follow and step forward with CRAZY amounts of trust.

Sometimes, I feel like the first choice is easier because it is way more tempting to just ignore something than it is to actually do something about it.

In our first meeting with Bethany Christian Services, our social worker handed us a packet of a whole bunch of different banks that do Adoption Loans. It seemed like that would be a quick cork in the money problem if that is what direction we wanted to go.

Keep in mind, in the adoption process, it is not like a "Here is the huge chunk of money that you will have to pay and you can just pay it off as you feel led." It is more of a "Here is the amount you owe, pay it and we will move to the next step."

So, in my mind...Adoption Loan = Yes!

Then the whole trust thing came into play. We have had some close and important people in our lives talk with us about the Adoption Journey. Their advice?

"Don't do a loan. Trust God for the money. Because if God has brought you into this calling, He will not use debt to accomplish it."

Ok. That looks theoretically AWESOME on paper. Not so much when a bill is looking you in the face for double the amount that you have in your bank account.

So, I have struggled to come to a place where I can confidently say that I trust God to work in some really incredible ways to make this happen. Which is funny...because He has provided in amazing ways already throughout each step of this journey!

I have also really struggled with the fact that we have to ask others around us to support us.
Because seriously, I know very few people who love to ask others, in your most vulnerable state, for help. And I know even less people who LOVE asking for financial support. It is awkward, uncomfortable, and subject to serious judgement.

So if you have ever questioned why someone is fundraising for adoption, have considered fundraising for adoption, or are in the process of doing so...

This is where we have personally landed on this matter...

We can't do it by ourselves. We are doing everything that we can and making every sacrifice that we can make to save money and move forward. But we can't do it alone.

And we don't believe we were called to do it alone. We believe that God has put us in a spot to minister to others and allow others to minister to us. To humble ourselves enough to recognize that we are not in control, that we have to fully trust God, and that it is okay to ask for help in this calling that is not just about us, but about an orphan, and ultimately about living out the gospel.

So is fundraising for adoption okay?

I believe it is more than okay. I believe it is the body of Christ at its finest.
